What Gets Exported: Images, Formats, and Limits

Before you run an export it helps to know exactly what will land in your ZIP file. This guide answers the "will it export X?" questions we hear most often.

Which images are included

The app exports the images attached to each product in Shopify, in the same order they appear on the product in your admin. A few details worth knowing:

  • Images assigned to variants are included. They are part of the product's image list, so they come along with everything else. There is no separate step for variant media, which also means you will not get duplicates.
  • Up to 250 images per product are exported.
  • Draft and archived products are included alongside active ones, unless you narrow the export with the Status filter.
  • Products with no images still count toward the product total you see when you click Preview Count, but they produce no files.

The app only reads your product catalog. It never touches orders, customers, or any other part of your store. See What Data the App Accesses and Stores for the full picture.

What is never included

Media type Exported?
Product images, including images assigned to variants Yes
Videos uploaded to a product No
3D models No
External videos (YouTube, Vimeo) No
Collection images, blog images, theme assets No

The app is built for product images only. If a product has a mix of images and videos, you get the images and nothing else.

Format and resolution

Images are downloaded exactly as Shopify stores them:

  • Original resolution. No resizing or cropping.
  • Original format. A JPG stays a JPG, a PNG stays a PNG, and the same goes for GIF, WebP, and the other formats Shopify accepts. Nothing is converted.
  • No compression. The file you receive is the same file Shopify holds on its servers.

If you need images in a particular size or format, run them through your usual image tool after the export.

File and folder names

Each file is named using the template you pick under File Naming and placed according to your Folder Structure choice. See Custom File Naming Options and Folder Structure Options for the details.

If two images would end up with the same name in the same folder (for example two products both called "Blue T-Shirt" with the Product Title + Position template), the later ones get _1, _2, and so on added before the file extension so nothing is overwritten:

Blue-T-Shirt_1.jpg
Blue-T-Shirt_1_1.jpg
Blue-T-Shirt_1_2.jpg

The ZIP file itself

  • The ZIP is named after your store's myshopify.com name, for example My Store - Vast Product Image Exporter.zip.
  • It is a standard ZIP archive. It opens with the tools built into Windows and macOS, so you do not need any extra software.
  • Downloads can be paused and resumed. Browsers and download managers that support resuming pick up where they left off instead of starting over.
  • Very large exports are split into several numbered ZIP files, each a complete archive on its own. See Large Exports and Multi Part ZIP Files.

When there is nothing to export

If your selection matches products but none of them have images, or no products match at all, the export completes straight away. It appears in your Export History with 0 images, there is no download button, no email is sent, and nothing is counted toward your monthly usage. Adjust your filters and try again.
